چکیده

Chandra is detecting a significant population of normal and starburst galaxies in extremely deep X-ray exposures. For example, approximately 15% of the sources arising in the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North survey are fairly normal galaxies, where “normal” means “Milky Way-type” X-ray emission rather than simply exhibiting an “optically normal” spectrum. Many of these galaxies are being detected at large look-back times (z ≈ 0.1–0.5), allowing the study of the evolution of X-ray binary populations over significant cosmological timescales. We are also detecting individual off-nuclear ultraluminous X-ray sources (e.g., X-ray binaries), providing the first direct constraints on the prevalence of lower-mass black holes at significantly earlier times. The X-ray emission from such “normal” galaxies may also be a useful star-formation rate indicator, based on radio/X-ray cross-identifications. We describe the contribution of normal galaxies to the populations which make up the X-ray background and present their directly measured X-ray number counts. We find that normal and starburst galaxies should dominate the 0.5–2 keV number counts at X-ray fluxes fainter than ≈ 7×10 erg cm s (thus they will outnumber the “mighty” AGN). Finally, we look to the future, suggesting that it is important that the population of X-ray faint normal and starburst galaxies be well constrained in order to design the next generation of X-ray observatories.

DASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane

Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...

" Hidden " Seyfert 2 Galaxies and the X-ray Background

Obscured active galactic nuclei, which are classified optically as type 2 (narrow-line) Seyfert galaxies in the local universe, are by far the most promising candidates for the origin of the hard (2–10 keV) X-ray background radiation. However, optical follow-up observations of faint X-ray sources in deep Chandra images have revealed surprising numbers of apparently normal galaxies at modest red...

Wide Area X-ray Surveys for AGN and Starburst Galaxies

While often the point sources in X-ray surveys are dominated by AGN, with the high sensitivity of modern X-ray telescopes such as Chandra and XMM-Newton normal/starburst galaxies are also being detected in large numbers. We have made use of Bayesian statistics for both the selection of galaxies from deep X-ray surveys and in the analysis of the luminosity functions for galaxies. These technique...

Deep Extragalactic X-ray Surveys

Deep surveys of the cosmic X-ray background are reviewed in the context of observational progress enabled by the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission-Newton. The sources found by deep surveys are described along with their redshift and luminosity distributions, and the effectiveness of such surveys at selecting active galactic nuclei (AGN) is assessed. Some key results f...

SEYFERT GALAXIES AND THE HARD X-RAY BACKGROUND: ARTIFICIAL CHANDRA OBSERVATIONS OF z = 0.3 ACTIVE GALAXIES

Deep X-ray surveys have resolved much of the X-ray background radiation below 2 keV into discrete sources, but the background above 8 keV remains largely unresolved. The obscured (type 2) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) that are expected to dominate the hard X-ray background have not yet been detected in sufficient numbers to account for the observed background flux. However, deep X-ray surveys h...
